The modern fallacy of exercise

The 20th century marked the rise of specialised, competitive sports and the emergence of a thriving health and fitness industry.

But, despite the plethora of “scientifically proven” methods, programs and resources, the general population has never been so physically sedentary and out-of-shape.1

How is this possible?

Exercise has been misrepresented and packaged for personal profit by clever people whose aim it is to exploit the unsuspecting.

The rise in popularity of trendy, short-lived “fitness routines” does nothing to encourage people to value, practice and enjoy physical exercise as a means to life-long health maintenance.

It has, however, contributed to spreading a false perception of what health-related fitness is all about.

The fact of the matter is:
  • The way you breathe.

  • How you sit, stand and move.

  • Your sense of balance and flexibility.

  • The speed at which you usually walk.

These and other related aspects of yourself are the real, scientifically proven predictors of how long you will live and your quality of life.

What do we really need to
stay healthy?

The practice of fundamental movement and control skills will help you develop a baseline of physical competence that is useful in real-life, tangible ways.

Focus your attention on these things and you won’t need high-intensity training or any other “trending exercise regimes”.

You will empower yourself to develop and maintain a healthy body capable of resisting disease and comfortably handling practical day-to-day activities.

"If we could give every individual the right amount of nourishment and exercise, not too little and not too much, we would have found the safest way to health."

Barriers to exercise

A  study entitled 'Advising people to take more exercise is ineffective’ found that "blanket physical activity promotion in primary care is not effective."2

While lack of time is a popular excuse, what it really boils down to is people choosing to spend their free time doing something they enjoy more than exercise.

However, studies 3.4 have shown that people who deliberately immersed themselves in the feelings of moving and in the particulars of their surroundings during exercise found pleasure in movement.

Though the exercise experience 5.6 didn’t directly affect their interest in exercise, it did alter their satisfaction during exercise such that they gained enjoyment from being active and wanted to exercise again.

What is Wisercise?

WISERCISE is a shift in mindset from thinking of exercise as another daily task, to making it a rewarding, enjoyable part of your lifestyle.

This is achieved by turning any common physical activity, like walking, into a health-enhancing exercise through the skillful application of knowledge gleaned through scientific research.

What's the difference between physical activity and exercise?

Walking your dog, cleaning the house and taking out the garbage are forms of physical activity.

Exercise is physical activity that is planned, structured, repetitive and performed with the intention of maintaining and/or improving health and physical fitness.7.8

National Health Agencies such as the World Health Organisation, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (US) and the National Health Services (UK) recommend daily exercise over and above physical activity to attain health benefits and allay the onset of disease.

In this website, you will be provided with recommendations from real experts and evidence of what will work for you.
